September 2025 Update: SB 343 Formula Changes

California's child support guidelines were updated effective September 1, 2025. The formula now uses net income calculations instead of gross income for the "K" factors, promoting fairness across all income levels. Juno automatically applies the latest certified guidelines.

How California Calculates Child Support

California uses a unique formula-based approach established in Family Code ยง 4055, distinct from the income shares model used in other states.

The California Guideline Formula

CS = K[HN โ€“ (H%)(TN)]
CS

Child support amount to be paid

K

Combined total income available for support (based on net income as of Sept 2025)

HN

Net monthly disposable income of the higher-earning parent

H%

Approximate percentage of time the higher-earning parent has the child (timeshare)

TN

Combined total net monthly disposable income of both parents

Key Factors in California Calculations

California's formula considers multiple factors beyond just income

Net Disposable Income

Gross income from all sources minus allowable deductions including federal/state taxes, mandatory union dues, health insurance premiums, and mandatory retirement contributions.

Timeshare Percentage

The amount of time each parent spends with the child significantly impacts the calculation. California courts look at actual overnight stays to determine each parent's percentage.

Number of Children

Support obligations increase with additional children, calculated through the guideline formula's K factor adjustments.

Mandatory Add-Ons

Childcare costs, uninsured medical expenses, and health insurance premiums for the child are divided proportionally based on each parent's income.

Hardship Deductions

Additional dependent children from other relationships may affect the calculation under specific circumstances.

Income from All Sources

California considers all income sources: wages, bonuses, commissions, self-employment, rental income, retirement benefits, and more.
